  • Storm clouds brood over the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco, a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art. One of only a few surviving structures from the Exposition, it is the only one still situated on its original site. It was rebuilt in 1965, and renovation of the lagoon, walkways, and a seismic retrofit were completed in early 2009. The Palace of Fine Arts was designed by Bernard Maybeck, who took his inspiration from Roman and Greek architecture in designing what was essentially a fictional ruin from another time.

  • The atrium lobby of the San Francisco Hyatt Regency, located at the foot of Market Street and The Embarcadero in the financial district of San Francisco, served as the lobby of the Glass Tower in 1974's The Towering Inferno. The hotel is a part of the Embarcadero Center development by Trammell Crow, David Rockefeller and John Portman. As well as being a setting for numerous films, including Time after Time and Telephon, the lobby is itself inspired by a film. Architect John Portman has stated that its design was suggested to him by viewing the 1935 science fiction film Things to Come, whose screenplay was written by H.G. Wells.
